Look at the whole picture

I have seen the same bumper sticker at work for the last few weeks and it makes me think every time I read it.  It says:  "Believing bulls*** will not make it come true."  The statement itself is true, but the attitude is all wrong because it casts the concept of believe in a negative light.  I submit that this is a foolish attitude despite the truth of the words.

It reminded me of the opposite position.  I had a writing professor in college who made an analogy to an ostrich. He said, "Don't just hide your head in the sand or someone is going to come along and kick you in the butt and it will break your neck."  After I finished laughing at the visual imagery (think Road Runner and the Coyote), the principle really set in: ignoring the truth won't make it go away.  Thus, another foolish attitude on the other end of the spectrum.

Let's be reasonable people.  Extreme positions on any issue are foolish and end up making everyone look silly.  Temperance in all things.

"But we're not kissing"

A few nights ago, I took Daniel out.  I was keeping it from Megan so that I wouldn't have to hear about how much she wanted to come with me.  After Bryan returned home from work that night, I started getting ready to go.  Megan asked where I was going.  I told her I had a date.  She got excited.  Usually when I say I have a date, that means mommy and daddy are going and they get a babysitter.  So Daniel and I left. (I found out later that she was searching the house for Daniel.)

My date with Daniel was a Leatherby's.  This has always been a favorite place of mine.  I don't make it there very often.  It's probably been several years since I've been to Leatherby's.  Which is not a bad thing when it comes to the amount of sugar one can consume there.  I had originally had in mind to have Daniel pick whatever it was that he wanted and we would just share it.  It started out that way.  He saw a picture of the banana split that they make.  They make a few different sizes and of course this was the large one.  So I tried talking him into the smaller one.  But he just kept going back and forth with the pictures and not really reading what his options were. So I finally just said that I would pick something. We ordered Tracy's Peanut Butter cup.  When it arrived at our table, Daniel was excited by how much warm peanut butter and chocolate was just on the plate.  We then talked about whatever came to mind.  When we got to a moment where we didn't have anything to talk about, Daniel asked "Is this a date?"  I responded with a yes.  He then said, "but we're not kissing."  Hmmm.........I'm not quite sure where he got the idea that dates required kissing and that he thinks kissing happens the whole time.  I guess Bryan and I have got some work to do to set him straight.
